In celebration of Women’s Month, historian Dr. Maria Luisa Camagay delivered a lecture titled “Maraming Salamat mga Cigarrera: Researching Women in Philippine History” at Pilar Herrera Hall, Palma Hall, UP Diliman.
Dr. Camagay traced her journey in uncovering women’s stories in Philippine history, beginning with her archival research on cigarreras, or women cigar factory workers. She underscored the importance of gender as a lens in historical research and the role of language in shaping how women’s experiences are documented and understood.
From working in the archives to engaging directly with women in communities, Dr. Camagay’s scholarship bridges academic research and public history in its ability to make spaces for women’s voices in the national narrative.
