
Beyond the Ocean: The Philippines and China, Past and Present

The UP Department of History, in partnership with the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS), successfully hosted an online webinar last 7 March 2025 titled “Beyond the Ocean: The Philippines and China, Past and Present.” The event drew a significant audience of varying backgrounds and interests, including undergraduate students, educators, academics, history enthusiasts, and experts on foreign relations. The webinar featured an insightful discussion by Prof. Phillip Guingona, Ph.D., on the Philippines, China, and International Relations in the first half of the 20th century. Prof. Jely A. Galang, Ph.D., served as the moderator for the event.During Prof. Guingona’s hour-long discussion, he briefly shared key insights from his book China and the Philippines: A Connected History, c. 1900-1950. Overall, the webinar offered a fresh perspective into understanding the entangled histories and interactions between Filipinos and Chinese in the context of education and cultural exchange.
