Bachelor of Arts in History

The Bachelor of Arts (History) program is a four-year undergraduate course that requires 141 course units. The diversity of courses ranges from subjects in the Philippines, Asian, American, European history, and historiography. Aside from the basic training students receive in Spanish language, they are also exposed to other disciplines relevant to their fields of interest. Graduates of the program are expected to be equipped with the adequate and necessary training in historical methodology and to prepare them for teaching, research, or employment in institutions and agencies devoted to the advancement of scholarship in the fields of history and cultural studies. Eventually, they enter the fields of education, law, foreign service, research, journalism, tourism, and heritage conservation.

The Department adopts a progressive approach by requiring students to pass first the foundational courses) before being given the opportunity to enroll in the specialized higher-level History courses. For example, a History course like Kas 10 (Introduction to History) must be taken and successfully completed before students could enroll in higher historiography courses such as Kas 195 (Historical Methods), Kas 196 (World Historiography), Kas 197 (Philippine Historiography), Kas 198 (Selected Topics in Historiography), and Kas 199 (The History Research Paper). Therefore, the courses in the curriculum are designed in a structured and logical way, and therefore enable learners to make connections between the new knowledge presented and their prior knowledge and experiences. Furthermore, students can choose their desired cognate or elective courses (can be taken from any discipline), which prepares them for their thesis work by providing them with experience within that field of study. In addition, a student also has the option to choose which History courses to take per semester, provided they had passed the pre-requisite courses and they abide with prescribed curricular rules.

The students also have the freedom to choose their desired GE courses, provided that they meet the required number of units per domain: 15 units for Social Science and Philosophy, 15 units for Arts and Humanities and 6 units for Mathematics, Science and Technology. The GE courses enable the students to widen their intellectual and cultural perspective. Moreover, the flexibility of the curriculum through a balanced collection of subjects among the three domains enables the students to become aware of the current developments, emerging ideas and potential directions a field is progressing toward, in both the national and international setting.
