About
Aaron F. Viernes is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Department of History. He teaches Kasaysayan 1 (Philippine History), Kasaysayan 2 (Asia and the World), Kasaysayan 100 (Introduction to World Civilizations), and Kasaysayan 112 (Contemporary Philippines). He is also active in different initiatives of both the Department and the University that focus on the commemoration of Martial Law and the Marcos Dictatorship. He previously served as a consultant for the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC) and has facilitated several oral history workshops for the Commission. He is the Coordinator for the Office of Student Affairs of the College of Social Science and Philosophy. He has also been part of several book projects, including The Brethren III: The Craft Under the Republic (2018), Philippine History Source Book: Annotated Compilation of Selected Philippine History Primary Sources and Secondary Works (2020), and Identity and Independence: Filipino Women in Times of War and Peace (2021). His most recent work is an online research publication, The Dilemma of Philippine History Textbooks, co-authored with Prof. Maria Serena I. Diokno.
Aaron finished his BA and MA in History from the University of the Philippines. His research interests are Martial Law studies, human rights, and sports history.
