Abstract:
This study examines the historical development of obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) in the Philippines from the early twentieth century to the contemporary period, tracing its emergence as a distinct medical specialty and its role in advancing women’s healthcare. Drawing on a range of sources from early medical traditions, the lecture investigates how local knowledge systems—including midwifery and healing practices—engaged with colonial medicine and the rise of institutionalized healthcare. It highlights key moments of transition: from precolonial practices grounded in both empirical and spiritual frameworks, to the imposition of Western medical models during the Spanish and American periods, and culminating in the professionalization and consolidation of OB-GYN as a specialized field. The discussion explores the expansion of formal training programs, the implementation of public health policies, and the adoption of medical technologies, all situated within a broader historical and socio-political context. By framing OB-GYN within these shifting landscapes, the study underscores its centrality in shaping national health agendas and its enduring significance in Philippine medical practice today.
