National Training-Seminar for Teachers of Philippine History: Tulong-Guro sa Remote Learning

For two consecutive years, the UP Department of History conducted the National Training Seminar for Teachers of Philippine History as a component of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) Professional Education Series (PROFESS) Program. It aims to contribute to the capacity-building of Philippine history teachers in both the basic and tertiary education levels. In 2018, the training was designed to update the content of topics and themes on Philippine history. The following year focused on mapping the essential truths relevant to the teaching of Martial Law years in the Philippines (1972-1986) as outlined by the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC). The training slated in 2020 was canceled due to the current public health crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced educational institutions to shift from the traditional in-person class set-up to a remote learning modality that privileges virtual platforms and online processes. This continues to spur a multitude of challenges and constraints that have affected the way we teach and how we facilitate the learning process for our students. These include the reconfiguration of learning outcomes aligned with the new modality,  difficulties in preparing materials (access to library resources, digitization constraints, and copyright issues), the readiness of faculty members to utilize new assessment tools,  mental health and well-being concerns of faculty and students alike, communication constraints due to limited internet connection and related concerns, and logistical problems and insufficient resources to facilitate more responsive and effective classroom management. Amidst these issues and concerns, there is a need to examine our teaching and learning interventions to find ways to produce quality education while maximizing the limited resources.

It is in this context that the Department intends to organize a training this year focused on sharing good practices in the teaching of Philippine history in a remote learning context.  It is also designed to serve as a platform for students to share their remote learning experiences and insights.

Given our logistical and technical constraints, we can only cater to 3,000 participants in the Zoom platform. For the prospective participants, we will send you an email confirming your acceptance and containing the webinar details, next week. The training-seminar will still be available for viewing through the Facebook page of UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan, among other online platforms. These platforms will be monitored in real time by the PROFESS-History Team for comments and questions.
